Carpe Diem Instructions and Groups

Page history last edited by Eric Leonidas 8 years ago

On Monday, April 11, you will be on your own.  Your task will be to work with one other student to create two arguments about one seduction poem, either by Marvell, Donne, or Carew.

Together, you will complete the attached worksheet electronically.  If Monday’s class is not sufficient time, you may use Wednesday’s as well.  You will both sign the top of the worksheet to indicate that you participated equally (however you divide the work is up to you).

I have included an online .doc version of the worksheet.  This also allows you to keep a copy of your work, and to use it in writing your next paper.  Please print out your work and hand it in Monday, April 18.

Instructions:  For the poem assigned, you are to write two arguments and cite evidence for each.

  • In one argument, you will find the poem unsympathetic to its speaker.  In his attempt to seduce his auditor, the speaker misunderstands or ignores something important about sex and sexuality; about gender roles; about political or social power or resistance to it; about language and rhetoric; about salvation; about honor or human dignity; about the purpose of the poet or poetry; about the role or importance of social conventions or traditions; or about some other cultural, religious, or philosophical idea.

  • In another argument, you will find the poem sympathetic to its speaker.  In attempting to seduce his auditor, the speaker asserts something important about … (from above).

  • Please Note: Do not focus your two perspectives on the same subject.  I do not want one reading in which the speaker asserts the power of human expression and one reading in which the speaker exaggerates the power of human expression.

Groups:

Donne

  • Elizabeth Alessi and Paul Mayer
  • Nikita Khrenov and Cassidy Chiarito
  • Chloe Spinnanger and Brandon Peel

Marvell

  • Ashley Terranova and Taylor Greene
  • Sean Stoneman and Jasmine Cuas

Carew
